Courtrooms have a way of making everything feel serious. Evidence is presented, witnesses testify, arguments are heard, and then the entire room grows still. All eyes turn toward the judge because a few words can change the course of a person’s life: guilty, not guilty, or case dismissed.

In his message, The Final Verdict, Bryan Smith uses that familiar courtroom scene to point toward a much greater reality. Scripture teaches that every person will one day stand before God and give an account of his or her life. Hebrews 9:27 declares that it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this comes judgment. Romans 14:12 adds that every one of us will give an account of ourselves to God. No title, achievement, social standing, or religious background will exempt anyone from that moment. Every king, president, preacher, atheist, saint, and sinner will stand before the Judge of all the earth.

That truth is sobering, but it is not the end of the message. The Judge before whom humanity will stand is also the Savior who stepped into humanity, bore our sentence, shed His blood, and made mercy available. The final verdict does not have to be determined by our guilt alone. Through the gospel of Jesus Christ, the verdict can change.

THERE IS ONE JUDGE
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible consistently declares that there is one God and one Judge. Abraham referred to Him as “the Judge of all the earth.” Isaiah called the Lord our Judge, our Lawgiver, and our King. Hebrews describes Him as “God the Judge of all.” Scripture never presents competing judges or multiple divine authorities. There is one throne, one sovereign Lord, and one final authority over the souls of humanity.

That is why the words of Jesus in John 5 are so significant. Jesus said that the Father judges no man but has committed all judgment unto the Son. A few verses later, He explained why: authority was given to Him to execute judgment “because he is the Son of man.”

This does not mean that someone other than God has taken the throne. It means that God chose to judge humanity through the human nature He assumed in Jesus Christ. The invisible God was made manifest in flesh. The Creator entered His own creation. The One who made humanity chose to walk among humanity.

THE JUDGE UNDERSTANDS THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE
Jesus Christ is not a distant judge who has never felt the pressures, sorrows, and temptations of human life. As the Son of Man, He experienced hunger, exhaustion, rejection, betrayal, loneliness, grief, physical pain, false accusation, and death. Hebrews 4:15 teaches that He was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.

That matters because the One who will judge humanity knows what it means to live in flesh. He understands weakness without having surrendered to sin. He knows what betrayal feels like because He was betrayed. He knows what rejection feels like because His own people rejected Him. He knows grief because He wept. He knows physical suffering because He was beaten, wounded, and crucified.

God did not choose an unrelated or detached being to judge mankind. He chose to execute judgment through the humanity He assumed. The Judge came near. He walked where we walk and felt what we feel, yet remained completely holy. That is why Jesus Christ is both perfectly just and perfectly qualified to judge.

THE LION BECAME THE LAMB
Revelation 5 gives us one of the most powerful pictures in all of Scripture. John sees one throne in heaven and a sealed book in the hand of the One seated upon it. A mighty angel asks who is worthy to open the book and loose its seals, but no man in heaven, on earth, or under the earth is found worthy. No prophet, patriarch, king, or angel can do it, and John begins to weep.

Then an elder tells him not to weep because the Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed. John turns expecting to see a lion, but instead he sees a Lamb that had been slain.

The image is deeply significant. Jesus is worthy not only because He is God, but because God became man and gave Himself for humanity. The Lion became the Lamb. The Judge became the sacrifice. The One seated on the throne took on flesh, shed His blood, conquered death, and redeemed people from every tribe and nation.

Heaven declares Him worthy because He was slain and redeemed us to God by His blood. The scars made Him worthy. The cross made Him worthy. Calvary made Him worthy. The One who will judge the world first allowed Himself to be judged by the world.

THE JUDGE TOOK THE SENTENCE
Before Jesus ever sat in judgment over humanity, He stood before human judges. He stood before Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod. False witnesses accused Him. Soldiers mocked Him, beat Him, spat upon Him, and nailed Him to a cross. The only truly innocent man who ever lived was condemned by guilty people.

Why would He allow that?

He did it so that guilty people could one day be declared innocent by a holy Judge.

Second Corinthians 5:21 says that God made Him who knew no sin to become sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Jesus took the punishment we deserved. Justice was not ignored or abandoned; it was satisfied at the cross. The Judge took our sentence so that we could receive His pardon.

This is the heart of the gospel. Humanity owed a debt it could not pay, and Jesus paid a debt He did not owe. He took our place so that we could stand in His righteousness.

EVERY ONE OF US IS GUILTY
The need for salvation becomes clear when we honestly confront the condition of humanity. Romans 3:23 does not say that some have sinned. It says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

If every thought, motive, failure, and sinful decision were displayed before us, none of us could stand on our own merits. We cannot defend ourselves by comparing our lives to someone else’s. We cannot erase guilt through good deeds, religious activity, charitable giving, or moral effort. The wages of sin is death, and justice demands a sentence.

The central question, then, is not whether we are guilty. Scripture has already answered that. The question is how a perfectly just God can declare guilty people forgiven without compromising His holiness.

The answer is the blood of Jesus Christ.

OBEDIENCE TO THE GOSPEL CHANGES THE VERDICT
When the people in Acts 2 were convicted by Peter’s preaching, they asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Peter answered with heaven’s response to the gospel: repent, be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Repentance is a turning away from sin and toward God. Baptism in the name of Jesus Christ identifies us with His burial and brings remission of sins. Receiving the Holy Spirit brings the life and power of the risen Christ into the believer. Together, these are not human attempts to earn salvation. They are the biblical response to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Acts 22:16 says, “Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” God does not merely pretend sin never happened. He removes it. Psalm 103:12 says that as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

The gospel changes the verdict because the blood of Jesus changes the record.

THE DAY THE BOOKS ARE OPENED
Imagine the final judgment. The books are opened, and every failure is exposed. The accuser points toward the record and declares, “Guilty.” Your own conscience agrees. There is no excuse and no defense based on personal goodness.

Then the Judge raises His nail-scarred hands.

He sees the day you repented. He sees the day you were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. He sees the moment you received the gift of the Holy Spirit. He sees His blood applied to your life.

The same hands that healed the sick, blessed children, and were nailed to a cross now testify that the sentence has already been paid. The Judge who became your Savior speaks with authority over eternity:

Not guilty. Case dismissed.

That verdict is not given because you were sinless, deserving, or morally superior. It is given because Jesus Christ bore your sin, paid your debt, and washed you through His blood.

WHAT WILL YOUR FINAL VERDICT BE?
Every person will one day stand before Jesus Christ. The final judgment is not a metaphor or an optional belief. It is a biblical certainty. The only question is what verdict each person will hear.

Yet today, before judgment comes, the Judge is extending mercy. The Savior is still calling. The invitation of the gospel has not changed.

Those who have never repented can repent today. Those who have never been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ do not have to wait another day. Those who have never received the Holy Spirit can receive God’s promise. Acts 2:39 declares that the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Today is the day of salvation. Right now is the acceptable time. Through obedience to the gospel, sins can be remitted, lives can be transformed, and the final verdict can become the one every soul longs to hear:

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord.”
